Solar Pergola vs Solar Carport: Which One Actually Powers Your House

Solar pergola means two different products and only one of them powers your house. Here is the difference, and why the pergola is often the better buy anyway.

Before anything else, a warning about the words.

“Solar pergola” describes two products that have almost nothing in common. One of them will never power a single thing in your house, and it is the one that dominates the search results.

The two meanings

The self powering pergola. An aluminum louvered pergola with a small photovoltaic panel that charges an onboard battery. That battery runs the louver motor, the integrated LED strip, and sometimes a fan. It is a genuinely nice feature. It means you do not have to trench power out to the pergola. The generating pergola. Full sized PV modules, the same 400 watt class panels that would go on a roof, mounted as the pergola’s roof and wired through an inverter into your service panel. This is a solar array that happens to provide shade.

If a product page talks about ambience, remotes, LEDs, and fans, it is the first kind. If it talks about module wattage, inverters, and interconnection, it is the second. Product names will not tell you which. Spec sheets will.

Why the pergola usually wins on money

A solar carport costs about $3.62 per watt installed as of July 2026, against $2.60 for a roof, as covered in the cost guide. The premium is the structure. You are buying an entire building whose only reason to exist is holding panels up.

A patio cover is different, because a very large number of people were going to build one anyway. Once the posts, footings, and beams are in the budget as a home improvement project you actually wanted, the solar decision shrinks to a much smaller question: what does it cost to make this roof a generating surface instead of a solid one? That incremental number is far below the turnkey per watt figure, because most of the structure was never charged to the solar project.

Several manufacturers do sell a fixed solar roof as an alternative configuration on the same frame system. That is a different product ordered instead of the louvered roof, not an upgrade you bolt onto a louvered roof you already own. Ask which one you are being quoted, in those words.

Two trades, not one

This is the part that catches people planning either version.

The structure is carpentry, or aluminum and steel fabrication, done by a patio cover, pergola, or general contractor. The array is electrical work: PV wiring, inverter, service panel, and utility interconnection. In most states the second half requires an electrical license specifically. Texas is a clear example, with no state solar contractor license at all but a Texas Electrical Contractor License required for the PV side, and a legal position that a company may sell a solar system without a license and still not install it.

A patio cover builder is not thereby a solar installer. Ask any contractor quoting you a solar pergola which of the two halves they hold a license for, and who is doing the other one. If the answer is vague, that is your answer. What you can and cannot do yourself walks the same line for the DIY version.
