Search for a solar carport kit and you will find a great many pages promising one. Then you try to buy it.
We went looking properly in August 2026. Amazon returns 102 results for “solar carport kit”. We read the first 48, the ones Amazon ranks as most relevant, and every one is either an ordinary vehicle shelter or an ordinary vehicle shelter with a solar powered LED motion light screwed to a rafter. Not one is a photovoltaic carport. On the specialist side, the results are mostly commercial racking manufacturers who quote by project and do not sell to homeowners at all.
There is no solar carport in a box. What exists is three purchases you make separately, and one purpose built structure that covers the first of them.
Layer one: the structure
This is where the real decision lives, and where the honest answer costs money.
The purpose built option is Chiko, sold through Signature Solar. The Premier at $5,620 and the Maximo 185 at $9,200 are not car shelters that happen to accept panels. They are racking products shaped like carports: 150 and 185 MPH wind ratings, UL 2703 certification, 60 PSF snow on the Maximo, mounting designed around 60 cell, 72 cell, and large format modules in either orientation. Panels are separate on both.
Then there is the tempting path: buy a $2,900 cedar carport, buy $500 of clamps, and bolt the array to it.
Here is the caveat, and it is the one thing on this page we would ask you not to skim. An ordinary carport is engineered as a vehicle shelter. Its wind and snow ratings assume an empty roof. An array changes three things at once: the permanent dead load, the way wind lifts the roof plane, and the concentrated point loads where the clamps grab. A structure that comfortably survives a storm bare can behave very differently with several hundred pounds of glass and aluminum bolted across it, and the failure mode is not subtle.
That does not make it impossible. It makes it an engineering question rather than a shopping question. If you go this way, have the structure reviewed by a licensed engineer before you load it, and expect your building department to want the same paperwork. In much of the country an attached or permanent structure carrying PV needs a stamped drawing regardless.
Two things to avoid outright. Polycarbonate roofed carports, including the popular aluminum framed models around $2,400 to $2,700, are not candidates: the roof panels are glazing, not a structural deck, and there is nothing appropriate to attach to. Fabric and tube canopies, the $200 to $500 portable shelters, are not candidates for any reason worth writing down.
Layer two: racking
If you bought purpose built, this layer came with it. If you did not, you need a way to get modules onto the structure.
For a small array, an adjustable ground mount kit is the cheapest honest answer, around $130 for four 200W panels’ worth of hardware. For attaching directly to steel strut channel, end and mid clamps run about $10 to $12 per pack. Neither is exotic and neither is where you should economize by improvising.
Layer three: panels and inverter
Nothing here is carport specific. It is the same array you would have put on the roof, and everything in gear and components applies unchanged.
The one thing worth insisting on is listed equipment. An inverter carrying UL 1741 and batteries carrying UL 1973 and UL 9540A are not marketing badges, they are what an electrical inspector looks for. Kits that omit the listings are cheaper for a reason, and the saving evaporates the first time a plan review comes back.
What this adds up to
Here is the arithmetic most parts-versus-turnkey articles skip, and it does not say what you would expect.
A Chiko Premier at $5,620 plus the 2,340W kit at $5,000 is $10,620 in parts. The same 2.34 kilowatts turnkey, at $3.62 per watt, is about $8,470 installed. The parts cost more than the finished job, and you still owe an electrician.
That is not a mistake in the numbers, it is what happens when you buy a structure sized for one to four cars and put a small array on it. The $3.62 per watt figure comes from an average system of 9.7 kilowatts, and a structure costs roughly the same whether you hang 12 panels on it or 40. Spread over 2.34 kilowatts, that fixed cost is brutal. Spread over 9 or 10, it stops mattering nearly as much.
So the parts path is a scale play, not a discount. It gets better as the array gets bigger, because the structure stops getting more expensive and the panels do not. On a small array, buying turnkey is very likely the cheaper answer, and anyone telling you otherwise has not multiplied it out.
The parts path wins when you can do the structural half yourself. It stops winning the moment you forget that the electrical half is not optional and, in most states, is not legally yours. That line is where the DIY guide picks up.
