Solar Carport Cost in 2026 (And the Credit That No Longer Offsets It)

What a solar carport really costs in 2026: $3.62 per watt, roughly $18,100 for a one car system, and the 30% federal credit that expired before you got here.

A solar carport costs about $3.62 per watt installed as of July 2026. For the one car, 5 kilowatt system most people picture, that is roughly $18,100. The 9.7 kilowatt system that is average for residential carports runs about $34,998. Those are EnergySage’s figures, and they are turnkey numbers: structure, racking, panels, inverter, permit, labor, all of it.

Two things about that price deserve more attention than they usually get.

It is the most expensive way to mount a solar panel

You will see the carport premium described as around 13%. That number comes from comparing a 9.7 kilowatt carport to a 12 kilowatt rooftop system, which is comparing two different sized systems and is not a price comparison at all. Compare like for like, watt for watt, and a carport costs 39% more than putting the same array on your roof.

That premium is not waste. It buys you a structure, and a structure is the thing a roof hands you for free. If your roof is shaded, north facing, too old to drill, structurally marginal, or simply already full, the roof was never actually free for you. The premium is what it costs to build the surface the panels needed.

But if your roof is fine and you want a carport because it looks better, price that decision honestly. On a 9.7 kilowatt system the difference between $3.62 and $2.60 per watt is about $9,900.

The 30% federal credit is gone

This is the part most cost pages have not caught up with.

The Residential Clean Energy Credit under section 25D covered 30% of qualified clean energy property. The IRS states plainly that it applied to property installed “anytime from 2022 through December 31, 2025” and that the credit “is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025.”

A solar carport you place in service in 2026 gets nothing from it.

That is not a small correction. On a $34,998 carport, the credit that existed in 2025 would have been worth about $10,500. Every cost guide still printing an after credit price for a 2026 install, and there are many, is quoting a number that cannot be claimed. What you are actually paying for

The turnkey per watt figure hides that a solar carport is three separate purchases stacked together. Seeing them separately is what makes the price legible, and it is also where the savings hide.

The structure. The only purpose built residential product with real distribution is the Chiko line, sold through Signature Solar. The Premier Residential Steel Carport is $5,620 for one to four car sizes, rated to 150 MPH wind, UL 2703 certified, with a 5 degree tilt and a 25 year life and 10 year quality warranty. The larger Maximo 185 is $9,200 and takes 24 to 48 panels depending on size, rated to 185 MPH wind and 60 PSF snow. Panels are sold separately in both cases. Ordinary carports, the metal and cedar kits sold as vehicle shelters, run roughly $1,000 to $5,500, and come with an important caveat covered in what you can actually buy.

The racking. Clamps, rails, or an adjustable mount to attach modules to the structure. Tens to a few hundred dollars if you are buying parts, folded into the structure price if you buy purpose built.

The panels and inverter. Identical to what would have gone on the roof, and covered across gear and components. This is the layer where a carport costs exactly what any other install costs.

What it does to payback

With the federal credit gone, the arithmetic that made solar carports attractive in 2024 no longer holds. A $34,998 system that would have netted about $24,500 after the credit now costs the full $34,998. At a national average residential rate near 19 cents per kilowatt hour, a 9.7 kilowatt array in a decent sun region generates somewhere in the low five figures of dollars per decade. Run your own numbers with your own utility rate rather than any national average, because the rate is the single biggest variable and it is the one you can actually look up.

When a carport still makes sense

Three cases survive the loss of the credit.

The roof genuinely cannot take it. Shade, orientation, age, or structure. Here the comparison was never carport against roof, it was carport against no solar at all.

You were building the structure anyway. If a carport, pergola, or patio cover is already in the budget as a construction project, the incremental cost of making its roof generate power is far smaller than the $3.62 per watt turnkey figure, because you were already paying for the structure. What does not survive is aesthetics alone. Roughly $9,900 of extra cost on an average system, with no credit to soften it, is a lot to pay for keeping the roof clean.

Before you get a quote

Know which parts of the job are legally yours. There is no state solar contractor license in Texas, for example, but PV wiring, inverter work, service panel connections, and utility interconnection require a Texas Electrical Contractor License and licensed electricians on site. A company can legally sell you a solar system there without a license and still not be allowed to install it. Rules differ by state, and the split between structure work and electrical work is the line that decides what you can do yourself.
